Kudos to President Obama for highlighting the sexism in journalism at his last press conference before the holiday break. By calling only on women, he pointed to the same problem Eleanor Roosevelt addressed 80 plus years ago. She held women-only press conferences as First Lady, getting women reporters out of the fashion/style ghetto of the time, and into serious news.
More women are in the door now than in Eleanor’s day, but they are still held back in many, often subtle, ways. This discrimination isn’t confined to journalism, of course, as this terrific article by “Homeland” director Lesli Linka Glatter makes clear.
Every sector suffers from not taking full advantage of the diverse talent of our nation, from government to private industry and nonprofits. I look forward to the day when Presidents don’t have to remind the country that equal treatment is both smart and fair.
